New York, NY—The magazines may be little, but the weekend is big, big, big! It’s time once again for CLMP’s annual Lit Mag Marathon Weekend, a massive showcase of America’s diverse literary magazines and journals.

New York Public Library
Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at 42nd Street
DeWitt Wallace Periodical Room

Saturday, April 25, 2015, 2 – 4:30 p.m.
CLMP’s Lit Mag Marathon Weekend kicks off in an exciting new way: join us to be your own artist, poet, and publisher all at once. Create your own erasure masterpiece—to share and take home—in a single afternoon. Join the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses and The New York Public Library for the first NYC Erasure Festival.

What is Erasure, you ask? Not just a pop band:

Erasure is a form of found poetry created by erasing or marking out an existing text. Think of a government document after it’s been released by the CIA, but instead of redacting the interesting bits, what’s left is transformative and meaningful.

Jen Bervin’s Nets is an erasure of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Matthea Harvey’s Of Lamb is both a book-length erasure of a biography of Charles Lamb and a retelling of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Tom Phillips’s A Humament started out as a forgotten Victorian novel called A Human Document and became not only a new novel in poetry, but a book-length artwork as well.

The afternoon starts with a brief panel discussion on The Art of Erasure. Then it’s your turn. We’ll bring the Sharpies, crayons, highlighters and other erasure accoutrements, plus a huge supply of literary magazines. (And what a wonderful bonus: you can discover new literary magazines and writers you’ve never read before, then make their work part of your own.) We’ll be sharing the newly created masterpieces through social media and everyone attending can take home what they make.

The Community of Literary Magazines and Presses provides technical assistance to and advocates on behalf of literary small press and magazine publishers across America. This event made possible through the generous support of the New York Public, Library, Friends of CLMP, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New York State Council of the Arts, a state agency.
